Fourth Annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival
Visit WAP website for map & details.

Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival Brings Art to the Streets Over 2-Week Period
Starting Sunday, September 20, 2020

The COVID-19 health crisis has led to many changes in activities planned for 2020, including to the Annual Wheaton Arts Parade. However, with a new look for this year, the Parade will again bring art to the streets of Downtown Wheaton. There will also be a virtual festival of art.

The traditional one-day celebration has become a two-week event, starting Sunday, September 20. This year’s event will have art installations placed around the downtown area so visitors can experience the works of local artists day or night. The arts presentations also can be viewed virtually.

At noon on opening day, County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Sidney Katz kicked off the festival by unveiling an 8-foot pyramid in the first event on the new Marian Fryer Town Plaza. The plaza, on Reedie Drive, is adjacent to the recently opened 14-story County office building.

  • Watch a video compilation of the opening ceremony of the WAP Festival.
  • The “Path of Pyramids” and “Yarn Bomb” themed event has 8-foot and 4-foot high works of art painted and sculpted by local artists and installed around Downtown Wheaton from the town plaza to the Westfield Wheaton Mall.
  • There is a printed and web-based program with a map of the locations and information about each piece of art and the artist who made it. This will allow Wheaton to continue to ‘parade’ the triangle, the area formed by the intersection of Georgia Avenue, Veirs Mill Road, and University Blvd.
  • Visit WAP website for pyramid map to follow.
  • The path also extends north on Georgia Avenue to the Wheaton Library and Community Recreation Center complex.
  • Among the art on display is a pyramid created in collaboration with One Montgomery Green using non-recyclable plastics. Another pyramid is a mosaic created by families from Wheaton’s Latinx community. Linking the pyramids is the “Yarn Bomb” – color hangings from lampposts that were crocheted by Wheaton area residents.
  • V-FEST – Throughout the 2-week Wheaton Triangle Installation, WAP is celebrating with a Virtual Festival. The WAP V-Fest features performances by local students, artists and arts organizations.
  • Join the celebration at the WAP Virtual Festival.
  • The Path of Pyramids will be on display through Sunday, October 4.
  • Visit Wheaton Arts Parade Facebook page.

Dry Oases: Local Prohibitions of Alcohol in Montgomery County

Dry Oases” explores the longstanding prohibitions of alcohol in Kensington, Damascus, and Takoma Park, which lasted for more than half a century after the repeal of national Prohibition in 1933.

Located in northeastern Montgomery County, Laytonsville evolved from a Native American trail to a market crossroads known as “Cracklintown” and to the vibrant community it is today. The name originated from the popular cracklin bread, essentially a bacon-cornbread, baked in the area.

Reflect back on 200 years with the stories of women and men who drew on their strengths and skills to build this town and community.

This local history presentation is filled with universal themes, and is based on the speakers’ book by the same title, “Laytonsville: From Crossroads to Community”.

Speakers:

There’s more to hiring people with I/DD than a sense of social responsibility. Individuals with disabilities can be valuable office assets, ultimately doing far more for your company – and your customers – than you imagine.
Join us for this expert panel as we look at strategies for hiring, training and setting up employees with disabilities for success.

The Panelists:

  • Daria Cervantes, Chief Operating Officer for The Arc Montgomery County, oversees a workforce of approximately 400 staff who support about 600 children, youth, adults and seniors every day. Most recently, she secured additional funding from Montgomery County to ensure that county contracts held by The Arc pay minimum wage to people with disabilities.
  • Marie Harvey Taylor, Project Coordinator for Training and Development in the College of Education and the Center for Transition and Career Innovation (CTCI) at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she is developing an online curriculum to teach workers in the education and the disability field to create individualized work experiences for youth with disabilities.
  • Sara Portman Milner, Co-founder and Director of Student Services at Sunflower Bakery and Café Sunflower: “I am very passionate about the employment of people with learning differences and the benefits to businesses and other entities. It truly is a “win-win!”

  • One of the first steps toward overturning school segregation occurred here in Montgomery County when civil rights icon Thurgood Marshall won an important legal victory ending unequal pay for white and black teachers.
  • To commemorate Black History Month, local historian Ralph Buglass will explain how the little-known 1937 case helped lay the foundation for the landmark Supreme Court decision outlawing separate white and black teachers – nearly two decades later.
  • Plus: a look back at Wheaton and Kensington’s white and black schools of a century ago – two of which are still standing today.
  • Ralph Buglass speaks frequently on a variety of local history topics for Montgomery County Historical Society, and has taught adult education courses at Montgomery College, American University, Oasis, and elsewhere. He recently gave an invited presentation on this topic at Bowie State University.
  • Mr. Buglass is a retired communications professional, he has a B.A. in American history from Cornell University and M.A. in journalism from American University.
